In “The Gem of Life,” a party of 4-6 characters (levels 3-5) embarks on a thrilling quest to retrieve a powerful magical gem for the dwarf engineer, Gruk Ironfist. This gem is vital to animating Gruk’s life-long creation — a metal companion. The adventure takes the players deep into a troll-infested cave hidden within a mountainous region, presenting them with challenging encounters. The adventure is divided into three parts, with two alternative endings and one optional sidequest.

Part 1: The Journey to the Cave

The players begin their adventure in the small village of Stonehaven, where they meet Gruk Ironfist at the local inn. He tasks them with retrieving the Gem of Life and provides a map to the cave. The party then embarks on a two-day journey through hazardous mountain terrain, facing rockslides, a precarious ancient bridge, and territorial wild mountain goats. Along the way, they meet the dwarven prospector Orin Stonefoot, who provides valuable information about the trolls and the cave.

Part 2: The Troll Lair

Upon reaching the cave entrance, the players witness trolls dragging a captive elven ranger named Selara Swiftwind into their lair. They must navigate through seven rooms filled with troll guards, a storage room with hidden treasure, a natural cavern with an underground stream, and a trap-ridden corridor with a hidden net trap. The players’ choices about rescuing Selara and triggering traps directly affect the encounters they face later.

Depending on their earlier choices, they may face him alone or backed by his guards, with the captured ranger’s fate hanging in the balance — and they must decide whether to fight, negotiate, or turn the chamber itself to their advantage. Once they retrieve the gem, they return to Gruk Ironfist, who animates his creation and rewards the party. Or so it would seem.

Alternative Endings

The adventure features two alternative endings, in which the gem’s power does not bring quite the result Gruk hoped for — providing an exciting twist and an additional encounter to close the adventure.

Sidequest: The Poisoned Spring

An optional sidequest in which the players discover a contaminated spring and meet a local druid, clearing the creatures fouling the water in exchange for a loyal animal companion.
